Frequently Asked Questions

Planning your trip with Rawhide River Trips should feel just as easy as being out on the water. Whether you’re wondering about experience levels, safety, what to bring, or what to expect, we’ve put together answers to the most common questions we hear from guests. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, our team is always happy to help—just reach out and we’ll point you in the right direction.

  • Do I need prior rafting experience?

No previous rafting experience is required. Rawhide River Trips offers adventures suitable for a wide range of skill levels, from calm scenic floats to more exciting whitewater runs. Your guides provide clear instructions before launching and coaching along the way, so beginners can feel comfortable while still enjoying the adventure. Experienced rafters will also appreciate the local expertise and river knowledge your guides bring.

  • How safe are your rafting trips?

Safety is a top priority on every trip. Guides are trained in river safety, rescue techniques, and first aid, and all equipment is regularly inspected and maintained to high industry standards. Before heading out, you’ll receive a safety orientation covering paddling techniques, river awareness, and what to expect. This preparation helps ensure a fun, confident experience for everyone on the water.

  • What should I wear for a rafting trip?

Dress for comfort and changing weather conditions. Quick-dry clothing such as synthetic shirts, shorts, or lightweight pants works best. Avoid cotton because it stays wet and can make you chilly. Secure footwear like water shoes, sport sandals with straps, or old sneakers are recommended. A hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses with a strap help protect against sun exposure, and bringing a dry change of clothes for afterward is always a good idea.

  • What should I bring with me on the raft?

Keep personal items minimal. Essentials include sunscreen, sunglasses, any necessary medications, and a reusable water bottle if allowed. Waterproof cameras or phones in dry cases are great if you’d like photos. Larger bags, extra clothes, or valuables are typically stored safely off the raft. When in doubt, ask your guides ahead of time — they’re happy to advise.

  • Are your fishing trips beginner-friendly?

Absolutely. Guided fishing trips are designed to be welcoming for beginners while still engaging for experienced anglers. Guides provide instruction on casting techniques, reading the water, bait or fly selection, and fish handling. Many guests discover a new love for fishing through these relaxed, educational outings.

  • What kinds of fish can we expect to catch?

The Salmon River region is known for excellent fishing opportunities. Depending on the season, anglers may encounter steelhead, Chinook salmon, rainbow trout, or cutthroat trout. Your guide will help target species that are active at the time of your trip and share insights into local river ecology and fishing techniques.

  • Is there an age limit?

Minimum:  Our usual age limit for white water is 6 years old. Depending on water level and the child we may raise or lower the agelimit. Give us a call to discuss any questions. For scenic floats it is left tothe parents discretion.

Maximum: We do not have a maximum age limit. We’ve taken 90 year olds before that have had a blast. However it is up to each person to reasonably assess their health level and abilities.

  • Where do we meet?

For most of our trips we will meet at the Rawhide River Trips boathouse located at 2040 US-93 North Fork, ID. From here it is a short drive to our put-ins on the river. Sometimes for fishing trips it may make more sense to meet at a different location depending on where your guide is planning to fish on that day. Often times our fishing guides prefer to get started as early in the morning as they can. We may be in contact with you to coordinate where and when to meet for fishing trips.

  • Is fishing gear provided, or should I bring my own?

Most trips include quality rods, reels, tackle, and other necessary equipment. Guides select gear suited to current river conditions and target species. If you prefer using your own equipment, you’re usually welcome to bring it — just check in advance so your guide can ensure it’s appropriate for the trip.

  • How physically demanding are rafting or fishing trips?

Trips are designed to accommodate a wide range of activity levels. Rafting may involve some paddling, but guides help coordinate the effort, and there are often opportunities to relax and enjoy the scenery. Fishing trips are generally low to moderate activity, depending on whether you’re wading, casting frequently, or floating between spots. If you have mobility concerns, let the outfitter know so they can recommend the best option.

  • What safety equipment is provided?

All necessary safety gear is included, such as properly fitted life jackets, paddles, and any specialized river equipment required for your trip. Guides ensure everyone understands how to use the equipment correctly. Additional gear may be provided depending on weather conditions or trip type to maximize comfort and safety.

  • What is the overall experience like?

Trips combine adventure, beautiful scenery, wildlife viewing, and educational insights about the Salmon River ecosystem. Many guests appreciate the balance between excitement and relaxation — whether navigating rapids, casting a line, or simply enjoying Idaho’s stunning landscapes. The goal is to create memorable outdoor experiences you’ll want to repeat.

  • When is the best time of year to raft or fish?

Rafting season generally aligns with warmer months when river flows are ideal for recreation. Fishing seasons vary depending on species migrations and water conditions. Early booking is recommended, especially during peak summer months, and guides can suggest the best timing based on your interests.

  • Will guides provide instruction and help during the trip?

Yes — guides are there not only for safety but also to enhance your experience. They provide instruction, share local history and environmental knowledge, help improve fishing skills, and ensure everyone feels comfortable. Their expertise often turns a good trip into a truly memorable one.
